Lemon-grass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), gets its name from its distinctive lemon/citric smell. However, in actual, it is a barbed wire grass species growing mainly in the tropical and sub-tropical climates of south-east Asia and Africa. In India, it is cultivated best in the moist climates of the western ghats of Kerala and Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and in states beside foothills of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

Kerala’s lemon-grass is famous around the world for its rich flavour and high quality. Essential oil extracted directly from the plant and also its various derivatives are exported in large quantity across the world.
